"Pick away on the old banjo, keep that guitar strumming, put more water in the soup, there’s better times a’comin.” Every time Bruce Adkins thinks about this line from an old country song, he can’t help but smile. A bit of humor was usually what this former girls’ basketball coach needed when he was in the midst of a tough game. And sometimes it was what his players needed as well. Bruce often recited this lyric at the end of his halftime speech and the laughter it evoked always seemed to put the game they were playingwin or loseinto perspective.
Pass and Shoot
Bruce never intended to be a teacher nor a coach. But as fate would have it, this Iowa native graduated from Central College with a teaching degree and his first coaching assignmentgirls’ basketball. Playing as a guard on his high school team was quite different from coaching players and refining their skills, but Bruce was up for the challenge. What he lacked in experience, he more than made up for with his passion for the game, tireless work ethic and belief in doing what’s right. And with many conference titles and numerous state tournament appearances, and an induction into the Iowa Girls’ Coaches Hall of Fame, the results of Bruce’s driven approach speaks for itself.
A Team Player
While the competition and the strategy of basketball certainly appealed to this successful coach and businessman, it was the relationships Bruce forged with his players, the staff and the community he treasured most. As the descendant of an early Iowa pioneer, Bruce has always had strong connections to the Cedar Valley area. Raised on a farm with eight brothers and sisters, generations of Bruce’s family have resided here and still do. The rolling countryside and the change of seasons define Bruce’s hometown. And as an avid outdoorsman, there’s nowhere else he’d rather be than hunting wild mushrooms, working with his Brittanys or growing pumpkins for his granddaughter, Callie.
